Which Frameless Glass Balustrade Is Right for Your Balcony? Mounting Systems & Glass Colours

Frameless glass balustrades are designed to provide safety without interrupting the architecture or surrounding view. Their clean lines and minimal hardware make them particularly well suited to balconies, patios, pool areas and elevated outdoor spaces.
But while the finished result may look simple, there are several different ways in which a frameless glass balustrade can be installed.
The mounting system affects how much hardware is visible, how much usable balcony space you retain, and ultimately how the balustrade becomes part of the architecture. The colour of the glass can then change the character of the entire installation — from almost invisible clear glass to dramatic grey or warm bronze.
Below, we look at some of the most popular frameless glass balustrade systems and the different glass colours available.
Four Ways to Mount a Frameless Glass Balustrade
There is no single mounting system that is right for every balcony. The best option depends on the structure, the available fixing points and the finished look you want to achieve.

Above demonstrates four different approaches: recessed glass, a surface-mounted base channel, side-mounted glass and floor-mounted spigots.
Although each system uses frameless glass, the way the glass is supported creates a noticeably different architectural finish.
1. Recessed Glass Balustrades

A recessed balustrade offers one of the cleanest and most minimal finishes available.
The glass is installed into a channel that is built into or concealed within the balcony structure. Once the surrounding finishes are completed, very little of the fixing system remains visible.
The result is the appearance of glass emerging almost directly from the floor.
Recessed systems work particularly well on contemporary homes where uninterrupted lines and concealed detailing are important to the overall design.
They are especially effective when the balustrade system is considered during the architectural or construction phase, as the structure can be prepared to accommodate the recessed channel.
For homeowners looking for the most seamless frameless appearance, this is often the preferred option.
2. Base Channel Glass Balustrades

A base-mounted channel provides the same clean, continuous style as a recessed system, but the aluminium or stainless-steel channel remains visible above the finished floor.
The glass is secured continuously along its base rather than being supported at individual fixing points.
This creates a strong architectural line along the balcony while still allowing the upper section of the balustrade to remain completely frameless.
Base channels are available in different finishes, including brushed stainless steel and black, allowing the system to coordinate with aluminium doors, windows and other architectural elements.
It is a particularly useful option where a recessed installation is not practical but a continuous, minimalist mounting system is still desired.
3. Side-Mounted Glass Balustrades

With a side-mounted balustrade, the glass is fixed to the outside face of the balcony slab rather than on top of the balcony floor.
This has one major advantage: it preserves the full usable width of the balcony.
Because the mounting hardware sits outside the walking surface, there is no channel or fixing system taking up space along the perimeter of the balcony.
The glass can also continue down past the edge of the slab, creating a very clean vertical appearance when viewed from outside the property.
Side-mounted systems work particularly well on narrower balconies and contemporary buildings where maximising floor space is important.
The visible side mounts can become part of the design and may be finished in brushed stainless steel or black depending on the architecture.
4. Floor-Mounted Glass with Spigots

Floor-mounted spigots provide a very different look.
Instead of using a continuous channel, each glass panel is supported by individual spigots mounted directly onto the balcony floor.
This reduces the amount of visible hardware and creates a lighter, more open appearance.
Round stainless-steel or black spigots can work particularly well where the design calls for a slightly more detailed fixing system without introducing posts or a traditional balustrade frame.
Because there is normally a small gap between the bottom of the glass and the finished floor, the individual glass panels remain visually distinct.
Spigot systems are versatile and can complement both contemporary and more relaxed architectural styles.
Choosing the Glass Colour
Once the mounting system has been selected, the colour of the glass can dramatically influence the final appearance.
Clear, grey and bronze glass each interact differently with the architecture, surrounding landscape and natural light.

Clear Glass
Clear glass offers a clean, timeless finish with maximum transparency. It keeps views open and works easily with stone, timber, white render and dark aluminium frames.
Grey Glass
Grey glass adds a sophisticated smoked tone while still allowing plenty of visibility. It pairs particularly well with charcoal aluminium, black steelwork and contemporary architecture.
Bronze Glass
Bronze glass introduces a warmer, richer appearance with subtle brown tones. It complements timber, natural stone, earthy finishes and bronze aluminium beautifully.
Diamant Glass
Diamant glass is a premium low-iron glass with exceptional clarity and minimal green tint. It is ideal for high-end projects where maximum transparency and true colour are important.
Which Combination Is Right for Your Balcony?
The mounting system and glass colour should ideally be considered together.
A recessed clear-glass balustrade creates an almost invisible barrier.
A black side-mounted system with grey glass creates a stronger, more dramatic contemporary finish.
Bronze glass combined with warm architectural finishes can create an entirely different aesthetic again.
There is no universal best option. The right solution depends on the balcony structure, available fixing points, surrounding finishes, views and the overall architectural style of the property.
The most successful frameless glass balustrades are those that feel as though they were designed as part of the building rather than added afterwards.
